Before becoming a mom, I taught pre-k for almost 10 years. I think it's the fun, uninhibited nature of preschool aged kids that I love most. When I had my first daughter, I stepped back from teaching and while I'm so glad for the opportunity to do what's best for me and my family, I do miss my students! God is funny, though, and He brought working with kids back into my life as a Baltimore County preschool photographer!
This branch of my photography business is so FUN. I love watching kids' expressions change over the course of our few minutes together, especially those who are reserved in the first frame and then belly laughing in the last. I also love seeing how much students change year to year. I remember my first year photographing this Baltimore preschool, some of those little babies were so shy and unsure. Now, this year, they are confident, goofy four and five year olds!
Like a family session, I approach my school sessions with a laid back demeanor, focused on meeting students where they are. I don't ask for awkward poses or forced smiles. I tell jokes and say funny words in funny voices, ask them silly questions. That's it. Some kids are more willing, and some aren't, and that's okay! The variety is part of the beauty of this style of school portraits.
